Sustainable Agriculture:
Market Linkages

Uttarakhand, India

Download Our Project Factsheet

In Uttarakhand, the pahadi communities have been practicing natural farming for generations. With most of the men migrating to the towns to earn better income, the pahadi women are the agricultural stronghold nurturing the household and the ecosystems. Remote villages in the steep, elevated areas have intermittent access to the towns, thereby the markets. These villages have fallen into the pattern of selling their produce to the middlemen who visit their village and buy the harvest at a minimal rate, selling it at an exponentially higher price in the market. This program aims to harness the organic and natural nature of agriculture practised in the mountain regions and support the mountain communities in developing a structured value chain and in accessing the right markets to get them fair prices.

Background of Project

The pahadi communities have been practicing natural farming for generations, creating tremendous value for the fresh mountain produce which is revered all over the world. However, despite the sustainable practices inherently adopted, the revenue generated is abysmal due to lack of market linkages.

The Project

Leveraging the inherent high value of the mountain produce and the central women-led nature of agriculture practised in the region, the program mobilizes the mountain communities to band together create a steady supply of the harvest. Sustainable market linkages are established to ensure that the communities receive a fair price for their produce.

The Benefits

Promoting the continuation of the traditional natural farming practices in mountain communities dissuade them from switching to utilization of chemical pesticides/fertilizers to boost growth, preserving the ecosystem. Also, ensuring a guaranteed buyback enhances their livelihood opportunities and helps them adapt to the varying demands of climate change, which is so crucial for these vulnerable communities.
